Oral Surgery
Oral surgery covers a range of treatments involving the teeth, gums and soft tissues of the mouth. At Cambria Dental, this typically includes procedures such as wisdom tooth removal, complex tooth extractions, apicectomies (treatment of infection at the tip of a tooth root), biopsies and dental implants to replace missing teeth.
You may be referred to Cambria Dental because the treatment you need is more complex than can be provided by your regular dentist, or because you have a medical history that requires additional expertise. We offer oral surgery both through NHS referral and as private treatment, and your dentist can arrange the referral on your behalf.
What is it like for patients?
All patients are treated by highly experienced clinicians. This may include dental surgeons with hospital-based oral surgery experience, a Specialist Oral Surgeon (registered on the General Dental Council’s specialist list), or an Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon who is dual-qualified in dentistry and medicine. Your care takes place in the calm, comfortable surroundings of our dental practice rather than a hospital setting.
Oral surgery in a dental practice is now routine and very safe. All procedures at Cambria Dental are carried out under local anaesthetic, with the option of intravenous sedation if you feel anxious. You will not be put to sleep. Many patients are surprised to learn that even a straightforward tooth extraction is classed as oral surgery, so there’s no need to feel alarmed by the term.
Our team will take the time to explain everything clearly and make your treatment as comfortable and stress-free as possible.
The referral process explained
1
REFERRAL FROM YOUR DENTIST
Your dentist identifies a dental issue that would be best treated in a specialist oral surgery practice. They’ll talk this through with you and complete a referral form, either for NHS treatment or a private referral at Cambria Dental.
2
REFERRAL REVIEWED
Cambria Dental receives your referral, the specialist team will review your case and offer you an appointment. Waiting times can be up to 8 months for NHS referrals, or around 2–3 weeks for private appointments.
3
SPECIALIST TREATMENT
At your referral appointment, you’ll be assessed and treated by one of Cambria Dental’s experienced oral surgeons, ensuring you receive the most appropriate care for your needs. This will take place in our specialist dental practice in Sketty, Swansea.
