Prevention
At Cambria Dental, we believe that prevention is the foundation of a healthy smile. It is always better to prevent dental problems such as gum disease, tooth decay, and oral cancer, rather than treating them later.
Our team takes a proactive approach to your oral health — working closely with you to provide clear, practical advice on daily care and habits that make a lasting difference.
Establishing good brushing and flossing habits, along with a healthy diet, help to reduce the risk of tooth decay and gum disease. With the right routine, you can keep your mouth healthy, your smile bright, and your natural teeth strong for years to come.
By working together — dentist, hygienist, and patient — we can help you maintain a confident and healthy smile.

Gum disease is described as swelling, soreness or infection of the tissues supporting the teeth. There are two main forms of gum disease: gingivitis and periodontal disease.
Gingivitis means ‘inflammation of the gums’. This is when the gums around the teeth become very red and swollen. Often the swollen gums bleed when they are brushed during cleaning.
In some individuals, long-standing gingivitis can develop into periodontal disease, also known as periodontitis. There are a number of types of periodontal disease and they all affect the tissues supporting the teeth. As the disease progresses, supporting bone may be lost, resulting in drifting and loosening of the teeth. If left untreated, this can eventually lead to loss of the affected teeth.
As well as helping you to prevent gum disease, our experienced hygienists are skilled in the treatment of periodontal disease should this be necessary.

Tooth decay happens when the enamel and dentine of a tooth become softened by acids produced when dietary sugars are acted on by bacteria naturally present in our mouths. Over time, this soft enamel and dentine can collapse resulting in a cavity (or hole) in the tooth. Tooth decay is also known as ‘dental decay’ or ‘dental caries’.
A combination of good oral hygiene, a healthy diet and regular dental checkups all help to reduce the risk of tooth decay.

Oral cancer can affect all parts of the mouth, tongue and lips. It may appear as a painless mouth ulcer that does not heal normally. A white or red patch in the mouth can also develop into a cancer. Be aware of any unusual lumps in your mouth or jaw area and any persistent hoarseness. It is important to visit your dental team or doctor if these areas do not heal within three weeks.
